Canaries have a shorter lifespan. The range is from 15 to 20 years.

#5. African Grey Parrot

African grey parrots are among the domesticated types and are having an average lifespan of around 50 to 60 years.

This bird species is one of the most common domesticated birds worldwide. Among the parrots, they stand second in the most harvested ones.

African grey parrots do not survive for that many years in the wild as they do in captivity. They usually live for about 20 to 25 years in the jungles. On the other hand, they can live over 60 years if domesticated and care properly.

The captive birds do not have the skills to protect themselves as the wild birds possess. They lack the skills to avoid predators and hunt food. Thus, they cannot survive without the human care and protection. Thus, escaped pets mostly cannot survive.

Over past few years, the parrot population has drastically declined. They have become one of the endangered species.

Many species of this bird are even extinct. IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, has declared over 130 species of parrot as near threatened. Among them, critically endangered species listed were over 16.
